Screenprinting!

Hey, how cool is this:

How did it get there?  Well…read on-

king crab chron cover concept by you.

Legendary life-enthusiast, W.A. Brenner from The Austin Chronicle was going to do an article on Screen Printing in Austin.  I had been knocking around an idea for a follow up to the “Sea Also Rises: The 14th St Station Squid,” and the Chron needed a cover…so we decided to get together and make babies. The above image was the first Idea I had, but it would’ve required the Chronicle to publish a sideways cover, which I didn’t know if it would be do-able or not. So I came up w/ the next idea-

This cover concept is oriented w/the regular layout of the Austin Chronicle. BUT- art director Jason Stout said do the 1st one! Which is cool, as I got more outta that layout anyway.

So, I sat my ass down for a few days and drew this out by hand. Blueline first, then pencils, and then inks. My butt actually started to hurt this took so long. I decided to throw in the ‘camino cats’ from my other upcoming print running away from the Crab.

Now comes the color! Unfortunately, Kevin Tong had to pass on coloring this one as he was mega busy. So, it’s up to me! I decided to go w/ the same 4 colors that he had established from coloring the Squid print, but on Creme paper, and added a 5th layer of transparent grey to get some more modeling outta the print. The fun thing is that the grey makes it look like I got a TON of colors on this thing, each overlay creating a shade of the color underneath. But in actuality, it’s just 5 screens.

Aaah. AAAh… almost done. Sheesh. The finishing up takes way longer than I thought, as I added detail to every little thing. What the heck is wrong w/ me!!!

The Sea Also Rises- Incident 6: The King of Crabs Claims his Throne by you.
All done. This is the file that the Chronicle can print from.  Now…to do the separations so I can screenprint it (Or more accurately, so Clint Wilson can screen print it w/ my oversight, while I hog all the credit)!  I do create the image w/ separations as I go, but there’s a bit of polish and stuff to add. Making sure the trapping works, etc.

crab layers 1 blue by you.
1st layer down, blue
crab layers 2 yellow by you.
And now the yellow- you’ll see how the yellow and blue make green…just like my pee. The yellow goes under the red on the next pass to make the crab a warmer yellow. The red on it’s own is going to actually be pretty cool (for a red)

crab layers 3 red by you.
3rd layer- some half-toning in the red makes the yellow pop through- the red reacts w/ the blue to make that muddy purple in the buildings. I like how the dog fur is looking there in the bottom right…kinda painterly.

crab layers 4 grey by you.
The grey adds a TON of depth to it all. Between the overlays and the halftoning it multiplies the colors like crazy. This is done by adding a LITTLE BIT of black ink into transparent base, making it very, very transparent.

crab layers 5 black line by you.
And the Black line locks it all up!
Now all that had to be done for the screen print was ALL THE ACTUAL SCREENPRINTING.  As I’m expecting a child next month AND I’m working on a comic book due at the end of the year WHILE ALSO running Nakatomi, I’ve been having Master-Printer Clint Wilson do more and more of my printing for me.  He’s got years of experience doing this professionally and wields a mean squeegie.  He assisted for the Squid print, and since he had to mix all the colors for that one (and this one is essentially the same palette) he was ready to roll.
Ah…the sweet smell of screenprints in the morning.  Here’s Clint racking up the yellow layer.
AND- here’s the results, w/ pics of the actual print-

Both Nakatomi and Kevin Tong’s TragicSunshine.com are sold out of the original ‘The Sea Also Rises’ 14th St. Station Squid print.  We do have some of the Line Art Variant left…if you really want, I guess you could bust out some markers and color it in.

We BOTH received a lot of emails about the print (spurred on by the release of the NEXT print in the series, King of Crabs, I’m guessing), and if you still need one, then let me show you to POSTER CABARET…they still have some left at the original price (for now…)!

They’ve got a banner on the side here, and Poster Cabaret has been buying from Kevin AND Doyle for a while, and run one of the largest poster websites on the net.  You’ll find a lot of sold out prints from both Doyle and Tong, so check ‘em out!

Go over there to pick one up (they have less than 20 right now…) and tell ‘em Nakatomi sent ya!

p.s.- the above killer photograph was from dannyxO’s photoset of flickr.  He took a bunch of great images of the print! Check his photostream out HERE.

Today (Thursday the 5th) The Austin Chronicle has a cover-story on Screen-printing in Austin!  And the cover is by Nakatomi Honch Heado, Tim Doyle!

Read the article HERE!

What’s the cover, you ask?  Why it’s none-other than the new print, ‘The Sea Also Rises: Incident 6- The King of Crabs Claims His Throne”!

“King of Crabs” is the follow up to the sold out “S.A.R. 19- 14th Station Squid”

This EPIC 5 color (yes, all that color is done w/ just 5 screens!) Hand-pulled screen print was printed by Clint Wilson at Nakatomi Print Labs ATX on Natural/Creme paper.  The print measures 18×24 and is signed and numbered by the artist in an edition of 150!  (Squid was 140, btw!)

Also available in a Line Art edition, limited to 10 copies and each print is individually got a character doodle on it!

Both prints are available RIGHT NOW in the Art Prints section of the Nakatomi store!
