Battlestar Galactica…theory Contest!
Posted by Alex Fugazi on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 at 3:03 am

Okay, okay…if you’re not following the BEST SHOW ON FREE CABLE, Battlestar Galactica, it’s too late now. Do what I probably SHOULD have done, wait until the whole frakking thing is over with, and just buy that monster of a box set when it comes out. It’ll probably have some amazing package treatment that will make all us early-adopters insanely jealous of our lesser standard cardboard packaging. I bet it comes in a model of the Galactica…With a lock of Grace Park’s hair.

Hmmm…Grace Park.

Wow…I totally lost track there.  Yeah- so…if you haven’t jumped on the BSG bandwagon yet, just wait 9 months and watch it all in one Frak-filled week.  Because if you’ve been watching it like me, one episode at a time for years now (first on Sci-Fi and now on the amazing interweb via HULU), you’re in complete agony.

So, I’ve been biding my time on the theories front, keeping quiet council with myself…but I think I’m ready to throw my hat into the ring on what I think the big mystery behind this all is.

Okay- ready?

Ahem.

The current BSG is a sequel show to the original show.

No shit.  That’s what I’m saying.  And in a few months when this is all said and done, I’m either going to look like a freaking psychic, or a complete idiot.

Think about it for a second- (the theory, not if I’m a complete idiot)- When the Humans and Rebel Cylons finally did find Earth- what was waiting for them?  A nuked planet, full of skeletons and Cylon Centurion remains.  And not Centurions from the ‘current’ run…these looked more than a little like the classic ones.

There’s been one particular ‘prophecy’ throughout the show, uttered by the hybrids and some humans alike- ‘This has happened before and this will happen again.”

My guess is that Humans created the Cylons.  They rebelled.  They go off and create their own form of ‘human’ in the 12 Cylon models.  Those humans go off and through the passage of time, lose their ‘origins’ and start thinking they’re human again.  They create Cylons.  The Cylons rebel.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

So, wild speculation time- Battlestar Galactica (’79) happened.  Galactica 80 happened.  Sometime after the original show wrapped, the Cylons nuked the planet.  This current series is an extension of that cycle.

Now, I’m aware there’s some holes here- in the original show, the Cylons were the inventions of a reptillian race, and they rebelled against their lizard-masters, and went on to bedevil the humans.  But what if that reptillian race-thing is now a red herring?

starbuck

And to top it off, that COULD completely explain Starbuck’s ressurection.  In the original show, Apollo  was brought back to life by a mysterious glowing white ship known as ‘The Ship of Lights.”

And if I’m not mistaken (and a little Googling proved me right) Starbuck herself painted a Ship of Lights like object on the walls of her cabin.  Hmm?  HMMM?

Now, would this break the ‘reality’ of what the current show has built over the last 4 years?  Well…yes.  But if handled with the careful touch of the current BSG creative team…it could be amazing, all the while pleasing those pesky “Original BSG is the ONLY BSG” jerkwads at the same time.

But that’s my theory…Let’s hear what you guys think.  And let’s say whoever is first to be ACTUALLY on the money at the season’s end will get a VERY special gift straight from Nakatomi.  Enter by replying below!  (when you register on the blog, I’ll get your contact info to send you your prize.)  But if it’s me that’s right, than you’ll just have to send me presents.  And Grace Park’s hair.

MMmmmMMM…Grace Park.

That’s a pretty good theory.I’ve watched the new BSG up until the end of season 3 though, so I’m also a bit behind and could be wrong. To help support your theory though, didn’t we see flashbacks to when Adama was fighting in the first Cylon War and the Cylons and ships were the same as those used in the 78 series at one point? (see Razor Flashbacks). But… We also have the fact that the characters are all the same(other than the fact that Starbuck is now a woman). So, that kind of throws things off if this is to take place after the fact. However, you could throw in a tear in the time continuum so that they are actually arriving at earth after their inevitable destruction. So.. maybe I can try and explain what I mean. So.. They arrive to earth the first time (1980) which is really the same as the this time (2009).. There is eventually a war between humans and cylons and they are forced to leave and start the colonies. However, when they travel out to the colonies, time is changed via high speed travel, or some theory of relativity. So, when they eventually find earth in the new series, they are actually returning to the earth that they were already at having time repeat itself. So, in essence, if they looked hard enough, they would find themselves there, albeit probably decomposed… So.. put it this way. I’ve been searching for my ancestors home planet way too long. I travel really fast to my home planet and find it (oddly enough, it’s been left a wasteland). My people rebuild and eventually I die and generations later, there’s a big earthquake, and my ancestors have to leave the home planet once again, but through their travels and the distance/speed, they go forward in time. Over the years, Eventually, they want to come back to their home. Right around this time, I’m born again, except as an ancestor of the original people of earth. When I travel back, time changes again, and I actually arrive back many years after I originally got there. Adama and his team only need to be around when Earth is found again. They were long gone when Earth had to be deserted. Because of time fluctuations with travel, they actually end up coming back after things have happened, and they cycle goes on. So, this will all repeat itself again and again, and they’ll keep coming back to an earth that’s been re-colonized/rediscovered over and over again by the same people. I think I just confused myself.

    Tom-
I think your reply gave me a stroke.
One addendum to my ‘theory’- yes, it would be odd that there are characters appearing AGAIN with the same names and general characteristics as they had in the original series- which I think could mean that these roles…these icons are programmed into the genetic material of the race, be it via Cylon or divine hand. Hate to go all ‘God Emperor of Dune’ on this, but that kind of cyclical genetic destiny has been a theme in Sci-fi before.

Of course, I could be completely out of my tree.

Don’t think you’re out of your mind. But I think they’re ultimately the same people. Destiny will always play itself out. However, each time, there are slight variations to the model, only because the state of the Earth changes everytime they come back.. Which is also why Starbuck is a woman this time round. I think of it as a rainbow slinky, where the points meet, but in a slightly different color as you go along. Prophesy plays such a big part in the series too. Everything that’s happening has been written before. So the question is whether it’s a neverending cycle? They find earth, they rebuild, tell the stories to their kids, and so on.. Perhaps they’ve come back to the same point more than once? i.e. it keeps happening, so eventually through repetition, it becomes religion. But because of fate/destiny, the same people come back to earth everytime, ultimatly allowing for the cycle to continue. I suspect the time they are on earth (before they have to evacuate) is probably a few thousand years everytime, which is why the stories of our heroes become a sort of prophesy. Anyway, might be reading too much into it, but I love the possibilities you’ve opened up.

Oh..My wife just had an idea. further to the thought you had about Cylons: “My guess is that Humans created the Cylons. They rebelled. They go off and create their own form of ‘human’ in the 12 Cylon models. Those humans go off and through the passage of time, lose their ‘origins’ and start thinking they’re human again. They create Cylons. The Cylons rebel. Lather, rinse, repeat.” What if the Humans are all Cylons. i.e. The whole chicken and the egg theory. Cylons go off.. eventually finding their way back, rehabitating Earth with humans. And eventually, Human’s create Cylons.. and the cycle goes on.. wow.
